China is anticipating a powerful typhoon and over 800,000 people from the coastal areas of eastern China were evacuated. Chan-hom might witness a landfall in the southern side of Shanghai. More than 400 flights were cancelled as winds recorded at up to 187 km/h are raging near the coastal areas.
According to latest reports, the storm in its course hit Philippines killing five people earlier in the week. It struck Taiwan and Japan injuring a number of people and uprooting trees.
China’s National Meteorological Centre warned that Chan-hom could be the worst typhoon to strike the region since 1949. It was forecast to make landfall in Zhejiang province near the port city of Ningbo, before moving towards Shanghai.
