GreenDestinations.info included Ljubljana, which is also the European Green Capital 2016, on its first Sustainable Destinations Global Top 100 list. The list was launched on 10 December 2014 to celebrate the management efforts of the most sustainable destinations on Earth.
The list is the result of open calls in the social media, followed by a selection by 30 international tourism sustainability experts. The Top 100 is a joint initiative of four leading organisations in sustainable tourism, , with Dr. Randy Durband, CEO of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, as a Special Advisor. ”These 100 destinations stand out for making meaningful and measurable progress in their individual journeys toward greater sustainability,” says Dr. Randy Durband.
GreenDestinations.info points out that Ljubljana “in the last 10 years achieved a remarkable sustainable transformation including local transport, pedestrianizing of the city centre, protection of green areas and affective solutions in waste and water management. Main focus of city development is to increase a quality of life, include stakeholders in city management, preserve local identity and offer its visitors unique experience.”
