Athens International Airport recognized for environment friendly efforts

Athens International Airport (AIA) has been recognized for its environmental efforts by the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme. The Airport is upgraded to level 3 status of the ACA.

The airport’s main emission reduction initiatives include reduction in electricity consumption by nine million kilowatt hours between 2005 and 2012 as well as the construction and operation of an 8.05 MWp Photovoltaic Park, the largest unified PV installation at an airport in the world.

The capital city of Greece has been rewarded for its environmental protection efforts, by achieving Optimisation status in the environment initiative. The airport is continuously working towards attaining a low carbon footprint. AIA earned the level by expanding its carbon footprint calculations to include indirect sources – such as emissions from aircraft during the landing and take-off cycle – and emissions associated with how personnel and passengers access to the airport, ground support equipment, and engaging other stakeholders on the airport site in minimising CO2 emissions.

From 2005 to 2012 Athens International Airport achieved an 18% reduction in carbon emissions from its activities, which amounts to 12,000 tonnes of CO2.

It has also reduced fuel consumption of its vehicle fleet through the conversion of 41 vehicles to run on LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) and replacement of older vehicles with new hybrid and low-emission models.

Athens International Airport is planning to implement a range of additional measures to save energy and fuel, such as the modernisation of equipment and the optimisation of the operation of its energy systems.
