Starting in January Iberia will offer an additional 1,200 flight connections a week at its T4 hub in Madrid-Barajas airport. Some 200 of these involve long-haul flights, particularly to the Americas. This represents a major increase in travel options for customers flying to the Spanish airline’s domestic and foreign destinations.
It was made possible via the reduction of minimum connection times by 10 minutes across its flight network. Currently, a minimum of 55 minutes are needed for connections within the main T4 building, and 65 minutes for connections between T4 and T4S. In January these times will be reduced to 45 and 55 minutes, respectively, for all flights operated by Iberia, Iberia Express, and Iberia Regional/Air Nostrum beginning or ending in T4.
To be able to cut connection times, Iberia introduced numerous measures under its Ágora project to streamline the transit of passengers and their luggage through the airport, which allowed it to optimise its flight programme.
Another factor was the continual improvements in Iberia’s flight punctuality, rated above 87% overall since April. This means Iberia can offer more flights and more connections to its 100-plus destinations, and it makes its T4 hub one of the most efficient in Europe.
