Hotel comparison website trivago.co.uk has compiled a list of the 20 best value UK destinations for 2014. The Best Value Index takes into account both hotel prices and hotel reviews to produce a list of hidden gems: lesser known destinations travellers may not have considered visiting before. Top of the list is North Yorkshire’s Leyburn, a traditional market town above the northern bank of the River Ure, boasting independent shops, pubs and tea rooms and close proximity to the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
The trivago Best Value Index combines the trivago Hotel Price Index with the trivago Reputation Ranking to produce an index which takes into account both hotel prices and hotel ratings. Based on over 2 million daily price enquiries and over 82 million hotel reviews from over 200 booking partners, the trivago Best Value Index is the most comprehensive in terms of value-for-money destinations. Included in the list are destinations with at least 25 hotels and 150 reviews.
Scotland performed well in the Index, with four of the top six destinations located here. Seaside resort Ayr and Callender, renowned as the gateway to the Highlands, are second and third respectively. In fifth position is ‘queen of the South’ Dumfries and Dunoon, the primary resort on the picturesque Cowal Peninsula.
Wales also performed well, with five destinations in the top 20. These include Abergavenny and Brecon, both bordering the famous Brecon Beacons National Park. Also among the Welsh destinations are seaside resorts Llandudno and Tenby. Bangor is the only city to feature in the Index.
Notable in England is the county of North Yorkshire, with three destinations in the top 20: Leyburn, Whitby and Scarborough. The latter two are historical coastal resorts, celebrated for their seasides, Whitby Abbey and Scarborough Castle.
14 out of the top 20 destinations are located on the coast, suggesting seaside resorts remain a commendable holiday choice in the UK, boasting reasonably priced and highly rated hotels.
