CLERMONT,
FL—A section of a three-story resort located here collapsed and
sank into a 60-ft.-wide sinkhole late Sunday that forced guests out
of their rooms, according to a news report from CNN. The Summer Bay
Resort is located about 10 minutes from Walt Disney World.
According
to CNN, guests called for help before the collapse, saying they heard
loud noises and windows cracking. All guests inside the buildings—an
estimated 35 people—were evacuated before the first structure
crumbled. No injuries were reported.
Tommy
Carpenter, manager for the Lake County Emergency Management Division,
told the New York Times, “Sinkholes are, unfortunately, a reality
of living in Florida,” which is rich in karst—formations that
include layers of soluble rock, mainly limestone, under the soil.
Randall
Orndorff of the United States Geological Survey also told the New
York Times that in the area between Tampa and Orlando, often called
“sinkhole alley,” four other sinkholes had been reported since
the spring.
