Bulgaria & Turkey to boost Tourism in Greece

According to Bank of Greece, tourism revenues in May posted a 38.5% increase from the same month last year, exceeding 1 billion euros against 760 million euros in 2012. 

The increase reflects the number of arrivals of non-resident travellers by 24.4%. 

Tourism receipts amounted to 1.054 billion euros in May, taking total tourism receipts in the first five months of the year to 1.733 billion euros, up 15.5% compared with the same period last year.

After a disappointing year in 2012 with people staying away in the face of protests, strikes and riots against austerity, Greece could set a record in 2013. According to a survey carried out by the Bank of Greece, tourist arrivals increased by 4.6% in first quarter of 2013, compare to Q1 2012. 

Arrivals from Europe, that represent the largest share of arrivals (78.9%), decreased by 2.6%, at the same time that a 3.3% drop was recorded from the European Union’s member states. Arrivals from Bulgaria, Spain, Russia and Germany showed a significant increase in absolute values. On the other hand, a significant decrease of arrivals, in absolute values, was observed in the cases of United Kingdom, Cyprus, Netherlands and Belgium. As regards the participation of non-residents arrivals by country of origin, the largest number of arrivals came from Bulgaria (14,6%), Albania (12,5%), Germany (8,1%), Cyprus (5,9%), United Kingdom (4,5%) and Italy (4,2%). Moreover, as regards the rest of all the continents, an increase of arrivals is observed. The most significant increase of arrivals, in absolute values, recorded from Asia, with a large contribution from Turkey.

The main points of entry which account for the biggest percentage of traffic, by road, are Promahonas (8,0%) and Evzoni (7,3%). As far as the arrivals by air are concerned, the airport of Athens holds the first place with (33,1%) followed by the airport of Thessaloniki with (8,3%)
