On April 20, Mexico's most popular destination; Cancun celebrated a momentous occasion: its 43rd birthday!
Since
its inception in 1970, this magnificent strip of Caribbean coastline
has become one of the most important tourism destinations in Mexico,
inviting international and national visitors to experience a taste of
Mexico’s flavor, culture, landscapes, and its famous warmth and
hospitality.
In
just 43 years, Cancun has evolved from a sleepy fishing village into
a world-class destination offering a unique blend of action-packed
activities and cultural experiences like the famous Cancun Underwater
Museum. As one of the destination’s most unique attractions, this
museum is home to more than 400 sculptures designed by famous
eco-sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor. Snorkeling the clear waters of
Cancun to view this living art is not only a fun experience, but it
also benefits the museum’s goal to preserve natural coral reefs in
the area.
Cancun
has also made a name for itself as a powerhouse culinary destination
with the success of the Second Annual Cancun-Riviera Maya Wine &
Food Festival and with the recent AAA Five Diamond Awards bestowed on
three of the destinations top restaurants. The newest addition to
Cancun’s luxurious properties, Paradisus Cancun is home to Tempo
Restaurant, headed by Michelin Star chef Martin Berasategui and
offers contemporary dishes and an extensive tasting menu.
Most
recently, Cancun has proven itself to be a top entertainment
destination as artists like Shakira, Enrique Iglesias, Usher, Jon
Secada and the Broadway spectacular “Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy”
has graced the stage of Moon Palace Golf & Spa Resort. Snoop Dogg
and Afrojack have also wowed fans at Oasis Cancun Resort. In the next
few months, the destination is honored to host concerts by the
Village People and the Beach Boys.
This
spring season was one of the destinations most successful weekends,
with more than 500 daily flights from the Cancun International
Airport and an approximate 90% occupancy rate. Spring break
festivities along with the Easter holiday rush made Cancun a top pick
for international and national visitors.
For
the upcoming summer, Cancun will host the Flight Center Global
Gathering which will assemble more than 3,000 travel agents from all
over the world. This summit will take place July 15 – 17 in Cancun
and will be attended by travel agencies from all over the United
States and Canada, the top international markets for the destination.
Cancun
celebrates a birthday full of well-deserved honors and achievements,
reaffirming the destination’s commitment to providing the best in
service and amenities for its guests.
