Travel tip #172: How to listen to inflight entertainment with your own headse

I am already on my way to Tbilisi, Georgia to meet the group that just ended their trip there on their farewell dinner and then start our first Armenia tour.

And let me tell you, I am SO EXCITED for all the great food I will eat 😍😍

I feel that some countries are very famous for food.

If I say amazing foodie destinations you probably think of Spain, Italy, France, Mexico...but rarely does Georgia get mentioned and this is yet another example that there is still a lot of the world to discover!

For example, did you know that Georgia and Armenia are actually the birthplace of wine? Yes, it is not France.

On our Armenia tour we visit the archeological remains of the oldest winery ever discovered, thousands of years ago, and in Georgia we learn about the art of wine making using "qvevri", or clay vessels that are buried underground and found nowhere else (but Armenia).

Both cuisines are a melting pot of Silk Road influences, fresh herbs, nuts such as walnuts and so many cooking techniques that are not found anywhere else.

Plus, who doesn't love the bread and cheese khachapuri dishes? yum!

Anyway, if I have made your mouth water, go take a look at our tours and follow us on Instagram, where I will be sharing the shenanigans of the next week in Armenia.

On this week's newsletter I wanted to talk to you about this little gadget I have discovered thanks to the Facebook community, that you can plug onto the entertainment system and connect your own headsets to.

It's brilliant!

But before, head over to your favorite podcast player and listen to this week's episode with the extremely articulate and well spoken Meg Ten Eyck, Chairman of the Board of the LGBTQ+ International Travel Association and Founder of every Queer which shares in-depth expertise on traveling the world as a member of the community.

How to listen to inflight entertainment with your own headset

I recently shared a list of the things I pack for a long haul flight.

You can read that newsletter here with all the items that I pack to make any flight, but particularly a long one, manageable.

This week I wanted to focus on one of them because I have been using it a few times already and it is GOLD!

I am talking about the AirFly Bluetooth transmitter.

This is a small broadcasting device that you connect to the audio jack on the entertainment system and it broadcasts via Bluetooth, to your wireless headsets.

It is extremely easy to set up, and it is so small it fits in any pocket.

When you purchase it, it comes with its own little bag and it charges like any other USB powered electronic you have.

You will have to charge it first, then follow the instructions to connect to your headset via Bluetooth. After that, as soon as you turn it on, your headset will recognise it and connect to it.

Voila!

Plug into the audio jack, turn on your headsets and you are set, with your own comfortable headset and the inflight entertainment.

You can also use it in many other situations, such as:

  • Plug into any gym equipment to hear the TV
  • Plug it into your car and transmit from your phone to the car speakers
  • Plug it into any iPad or other pad and have two people listen to it with their headsets

You can check out all the options available at the Twelve South store on Amazon

You will see 4 options for the iFly device, but I would recommend focusing on the Pro 2 range because the sound is much better since it connects to both ears and the battery life too.

  • The AirFly Pro allows for 2 person to listen at the same time. For example, when you have your own iPad and want to watch something with your partner.
  • AirFly Pro 2 range has upgraded sound quality
  • AirFly Pro 2 Deluxe comes with the 2-prong adaptor to use on many older entertainment systems that still use the 2 prong audio jack.

Given the high price difference between the Pro 2 and the Pro 2 Deluxe and knowing that many of the aircrafts I fly may be older, I bought the Pro 2 and then a separate 2-prong audio jack adaptor and this was 10 EUR cheaper than buying the AirFly Pro 2 Deluxe with its own adaptor, since this is the ONLY difference between the Pro 2 and Pro 2 Deluxe.

So this is my set up:

PS I highly recommend watching Moana if you are planning to join us in Polynesia. Almost everyone I met on the trip recommended me to watch it for how precise and great it was at depicting the history, the culture and the myths surrounding Polynesian people and after 2 weeks there, I couldn't agree more!
