The event took place from 27 to 31 July and brought together Member States and aviation partners. During the meeting, the International Civil Aviation Organization formalised initiatives covering aviation safety, regulatory oversight, institutional development and professional training.
The agreements reached during ICAO AFI Aviation Week are intended to translate regional cooperation into practical implementation support. Four initiatives involving Burkina Faso, Chad, Uganda and Zimbabwe were highlighted by the organisation.
In Burkina Faso, ICAO signed a Management Service Agreement establishing a framework for long-term capacity development and implementation support. The agreement was accompanied by a project to provide specialised training in civil aviation master planning and compliance with ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices.
In Chad, a new project will focus on strengthening technical capacity through training related to compliance with ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices. The programme will also cover Extended Diversion Time Operations, which apply to the operation of aircraft on routes located at extended distances from suitable diversion airports.
In Uganda, ICAO formally handed over the country’s new National Air Navigation Plan. The plan is intended to support the safe, efficient and sustainable development of Uganda’s air navigation system.
In Zimbabwe, a new human resources development project will support the organisational capacity of the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe. The project will establish a human resource management framework intended to improve institutional planning and support staff retention within the national aviation authority.
The four initiatives form part of ICAO’s wider cooperation with African Member States to strengthen regulatory systems, technical capabilities and workforce development across the region.
