IATA issues guidance for in-cabin pet travel

GENEVA – The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released new operational guidance for in-cabin pet travel. The guidelines cover each stage of the journey, including booking, check-in, boarding, the onboard experience and arrival.

The publication follows IATA’s recently introduced Guidance on Traveling with Service Dogs. Both initiatives form part of the association’s efforts to improve consistency in the air transport of dogs.

Brendan Sullivan, IATA’s Global Head of Cargo, said: “A pet is a much-loved member of the family. People traveling with their pets need clear guidance on what to expect at every step of the journey. That’s important because well-prepared travelers and industry-wide best practices enable airlines to deliver a safe, consistent, and efficient experience for those traveling with their pets.”

IATA’s 2025 Global Passenger Survey found that approximately one-quarter of respondents had travelled or would consider travelling with a pet. Among this group, 41% identified uncertainty about pet eligibility as a challenge.

A further 36% were unsure about airline policies, while 34% reported uncertainty about the overall process of travelling with a pet. The findings highlighted differences in passenger understanding of requirements and procedures.

The new In-Cabin Operational Guidelines provide recommended procedures intended to create a more predictable passenger experience. They also address safety, animal welfare and operational efficiency throughout the journey.
