The test demonstrates the possibilities that modern digital technologies already offer for cruise guest check-in. Digital check-in speeds up the embarkation process at the terminal and creates an even more comfortable arrival experience for guests. The service reduces waiting times, offers greater flexibility, and allows for a relaxed start to the vacation. Guests can still opt for personal service at a traditional counter or receive assistance from the crew during the check-in process. This makes the check-in process faster and more convenient for all guests.
Innovative solutions for efficient and convenient check-in
developed the new service in collaboration with Lufthansa Industry Solutions AS GmbH over a period of two years. The company, based in Norderstedt near Hamburg, specializes in IT consulting and system integration. Transferring the self-service check-in system from aviation to the cruise industry required consideration of various industry-specific requirements. These included, among other things, the integration of printers for boarding passes and the connection to the ship's systems. The boarding pass is RFID-encoded and serves on board as a payment method and cabin key, among other things. For security reasons, a current photograph is taken of each guest, which is stored in the ship's system for the duration of the voyage. The system automatically compares the photo taken at the terminal with the photo on the identification document using biometric data.
Evaluation of the Pilot Phase
During the current pilot phase at the Steinwerder Cruise Center, important insights are being gained that will be incorporated into the future rollout. Based on these findings, AIDA Cruises is evaluating the further implementation of the technology.
