REPORT – MarketHub Europe 2026, Malta – Malta is experiencing remarkable growth in its tourism industry, with a strategic focus on diversification and expanding global connectivity. Carlo Micallef, CEO of VisitMalta, shared the country’s tourism achievements and future plans during his welcome address at the MarketHub Europe 2026 conference in Valetta. Despite global challenges, the country is on track for continuous growth, with projections indicating the industry’s continued recovery and expansion.
Impressive Tourism Growth and Strong Recovery
In 2023, Malta welcomed over 4 million tourists, generating more than €4 billion in revenue. This represents 15-20% of the country’s economy, underscoring the importance of tourism to Malta’s economic stability. The sector has shown a strong rebound since the pandemic, with tourist numbers growing from 2.3 million in 2022 to an estimated 4.022 million in 2024, reflecting a remarkable recovery trajectory.
The positive growth has continued into 2026, with January and February reporting increases of 21% and 18.5%, respectively, compared to the same months in the previous year. These increases demonstrate Malta’s resilience in the face of ongoing global disruptions, positioning the island as a key European destination.
Strategic Diversification and Year-Round Appeal
One of Malta’s key strategies is to position itself as a year-round destination, attracting tourists beyond the traditional summer months. Malta is experiencing higher growth in winter tourism, which now surpasses summer growth rates. This diversification allows the country to spread tourist activity throughout the year, reducing dependency on peak-season traffic.
Additionally, Malta has focused on attracting a broader range of age groups, with the most significant growth seen in the 25-65 age bracket. Younger tourists continue to visit during school and university holidays for activities and parties, while older visitors are drawn to the island’s cultural and leisure offerings.
Malta’s current tourism strategy is centred around increasing the value of tourism rather than simply volume. By focusing on higher tourist expenditure, the country aims to enhance its position as a premium European destination, emphasising quality experiences for visitors over sheer numbers.
Expanding Global Reach and Connectivity
As part of its growth strategy, Malta has significantly enhanced its global connectivity. The country has opened an office in New York to tap into the North American market, and direct flights from JFK to Malta via Delta Airlines will begin in June 2026, offering two flights per week. This expansion into the North American market complements Malta’s existing focus on the European market, with over 120 routes connecting the island to destinations across Europe and beyond.
Further international expansion includes exploring markets in Latin America, particularly in Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico, as well as bolstering its presence in Australia, with an office now open in Melbourne. Asia remains a target market, with plans to strengthen connections in Japan and other countries in the region, alongside the ongoing support of direct flight routes from Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Emirates.
The Crucial Role of Travel Advisors
During his address, Micallef also highlighted the vital role that travel advisors play in guiding tourists and ensuring a smooth experience for visitors. Travel professionals are instrumental in providing expert recommendations, reassurance, and local knowledge to travellers looking for a memorable trip. Micallef invited travel advisors to visit Malta and experience the island firsthand, describing it as “a vibrant European city on an island setting” with rich culture, food, attractions, and lifestyle.
Malta’s tourism sector continues to benefit from its world-class infrastructure, appealing climate, and strong international relationships. The strategic diversification of its offerings and the expansion of global connectivity position Malta as a destination poised for sustainable growth and long-term success in the global tourism market.
VisitMalta’s focus on diversifying its tourism offerings, improving connectivity, and elevating the visitor experience has solidified the country’s position as one of Europe’s most attractive destinations. As global markets continue to evolve, Malta’s tourism sector is well-positioned for a bright future.
