Shanghai, London and Dubai lead global hotel room openings for 2026

 


ARLINGTON, VA. – Shanghai, London and Dubai are projected to record the highest number of new hotel room openings globally in 2026, according to pipeline data from CoStar. The figures highlight continued expansion across all major hotel regions worldwide.

In Europe, hotel openings totalled 56,043 rooms in 2025, while projected openings for 2026 are expected to more than double, reaching 123,789 rooms. London is forecast to lead the region with 5,822 new rooms opening in 2026, followed by Istanbul with 3,017 rooms.

The Asia Pacific region recorded 189,471 hotel room openings in 2025. For 2026, the pipeline indicates a further increase to 251,234 rooms. Shanghai is among the strongest markets in the region, with 7,457 rooms projected to open, while Beijing follows with 3,991 new rooms.

In the Middle East and Africa, hotel room openings reached 18,273 rooms in 2025. The number is projected to rise significantly in 2026 to 54,238 rooms. Dubai is expected to lead the region with 5,053 new hotel rooms, while Qatar is projected to add 2,406 rooms.

The Americas saw 99,056 hotel rooms open in 2025, with projected openings increasing to 132,479 rooms in 2026. Within the United States, New York City is forecast to lead with 4,852 new rooms, followed by Phoenix with 3,650 rooms. In the wider region, Cancun is also among the leading markets, with 1,839 rooms projected to open in 2026.

The data reflects sustained development activity across global hotel markets, with major gateway cities and established leisure destinations continuing to attract new hotel investment ahead of 2026.
