Iberia is reinforcing its presence in the New York market with the launch of a new daily service between Madrid and Newark Liberty International Airport, starting 29 March 2026. Timed to coincide with the start of the IATA Summer season, the new flight will complement the airline’s existing two daily services to John F. Kennedy International Airport.
With this addition, Iberia will operate three daily frequencies between Madrid and the New York area, strengthening its position on one of its most important long-haul markets. The Newark service is positioned to offer customers an additional gateway into the New York metropolitan region, with fast and convenient access to Manhattan and onward ground connections.
The airline highlights that the new route enhances flexibility and choice for both leisure and corporate customers. By diversifying its airport offering in New York, Iberia aims to better match different traveller preferences and itinerary requirements, particularly for those seeking easier access to New Jersey and the western side of the metro area, while maintaining strong connectivity via JFK.
42% capacity increase between Madrid and New York
During the 2026 summer season, Iberia will offer more than 350,000 seats between Madrid and New York, representing a 42% increase compared with 2025. This expansion underlines the importance of the Madrid – New York corridor within Iberia’s transatlantic portfolio and its role in serving growing traffic flows between Spain and the United States.
The additional capacity is expected to support both point-to-point demand and connecting traffic via Madrid to Iberia’s broader European and Latin American networks. For travel trade professionals, the extra daily frequency provides greater schedule choice for tailoring itineraries, group allocations and corporate travel programmes.

A321XLR: Iberia’s most efficient aircraft for transatlantic routes
The new Madrid – Newark route will be operated by the Airbus A321XLR, described as Iberia’s most efficient aircraft for transatlantic operations. Iberia is the launch airline for this aircraft type, which is designed to offer long-range capability with lower fuel consumption compared to larger widebody aircraft on similar sectors.
The deployment of the A321XLR on the Newark route underscores the airline’s focus on combining network growth with improved efficiency. For the market, this aircraft choice may also translate into more sustainable operations per seat, while maintaining long-haul comfort standards and a competitive onboard product.
“Our new flight to Newark is a tangible example of how Iberia is bringing our Flight Plan 2030 to life – a roadmap designed to consolidate our position as the leader in connectivity between Europe and the Americas. The addition of Newark not only strengthens our presence in New York with a third daily frequency but also expands options for our customers by offering greater flexibility in schedules and fares, along with the advantages of multi-frequency service. Newark’s proximity to Manhattan makes it an excellent choice for the corporate market. Furthermore, diversifying between John F. Kennedy International Airport and Newark allows us to optimize operations and better adapt to market needs, reinforcing our position along one of the most strategic corridors across the Atlantic,” explains María Jesús López Solás, Iberia’s Chief Commercial, Network Development and Alliances Officer.
Iberia in the United States
Iberia serves ten destinations in the United States and reinforces its commitment to the North American market with the addition of a daily frequency to Newark. In 2025, Iberia will offer nearly 2 million seats between Spain and the U.S. and an average of 150 weekly flights. This winter season, the Spanish airline will operate two daily flights to New York and Miami; up to two daily flights to Boston and Puerto Rico – routes strengthened by the arrival of the Airbus A321XLR – and three weekly flights to Washington, which has evolved from a summer-only route to year-round service. Iberia also maintains daily flights to Chicago, four weekly flights to Dallas Fort Worth and Orlando, and three to Los Angeles. San Francisco continues as a summer route with three weekly flights from May to September.
This network of nonstop flights, combined with the North Atlantic joint business agreement Iberia maintains with American Airlines, British Airways, and Finnair, provides robust connectivity – 400 destinations in more than 100 countries – and diversified options in the U.S.
Flight Plan 2030: new long-haul destinations
The launch of this third frequency to New York is part of Iberia’s Flight Plan 2030, the airline’s strategic roadmap for the coming years, which includes a 6 billion euros investment in fleet renewal and expansion – growing from 48 long-haul aircraft to 70 – digitalization of services, enhanced customer experience, and increased connectivity between Europe and the Americas.
As part of this plan, Iberia will inaugurate five new routes in the coming months. On October 26, Iberia began flights to Orlando, establishing the only direct connection from Madrid with four weekly frequencies. In the coming weeks, it will also launch two routes in northeastern Brazil: Recife starting December 13 and Fortaleza on January 19, both with three weekly flights. For the summer season, the airline will begin direct flights to Monterrey on June 2 with three weekly frequencies, and to Toronto on June 13 with five weekly flights.
The A321XLR: driving transatlantic expansion
The Newark service will be operated by the Airbus A321XLR, the aircraft that has transformed transatlantic connectivity with greater efficiency and flexibility. Iberia was the launch airline for this model, which enables long-haul destinations to be served with a single-aisle aircraft, reducing fuel consumption by up to 40% compared to traditional models and offering a premium experience with the new Airspace cabin, LED lighting, and two classes: Business and Economy.
