Collapse of renovated building in Madrid leaves dead and missing

Four people were found dead in the rubble of a renovated building in central Madrid, located near Plaza Mayor, according to local authorities.

The building was undergoing extensive renovation work to be converted into a four-star hotel. The structure collapsed around 1:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday. Emergency services and firefighting teams were deployed to the site, assisted by trained rescue dogs, drones, and heavy equipment such as cranes.

Madrid’s Mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, confirmed late Tuesday evening that two bodies had been located. The first recovered body belonged to a man, while the identity and gender of the second have yet to be confirmed. Spanish media earlier reported that a female architect and three construction workers were among those initially missing, though this has not been officially verified. Today, early in the morning, two bodies were found.

Approximately ten people sustained injuries during the incident, but no serious injuries have been reported at this stage.

The exact cause of the collapse remains unclear. The mayor stated that the police have launched an investigation to determine what led to the incident and whether there were any violations in the building’s renovation or safety procedures. As of now, no official statements regarding structural or operational irregularities have been released.

This incident raises concerns within the hotel and tourism sectors, as the property was expected to contribute to the hospitality capacity of Madrid’s historic center – one of Europe’s most visited urban destinations. Developments are being closely monitored by hospitality professionals, construction firms, and investors with active interests in the Spanish market.

Authorities continue recovery operations, with debris being carefully removed due to the risk of further structural collapse. The situation remains critical, and rescue teams are working under challenging conditions.
