EUROCONTROL and EASA reinforce environmental transparency with AVENIR Working Group Reports handover

EUROCONTROL has formally handed over the final reports of the AVENIR (Aviation Environmental Reporting) Working Group to the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). The handover was carried out by Tânia Cardoso Simões, EUROCONTROL's Director of Aviation Transformation, and received by Maria Nieves Rueda Garcia, EASA’s Director for Safety Management, Sustainability and Global Outreach.

Established under the joint EASA–EUROCONTROL Work Programme, over the past two years, the AVENIR WG has delivered remarkable results in the following set of reports:

  • Proposals for the new operational indicators that provide a more accurate way of linking flight inefficiencies to CO₂ emissions;
  • Catalogue of tools and dashboards, endorsed by ANSPs, documenting best practices and solutions to support greener ATM operations;
  • Guidance on contrail mitigation readiness, marking an important step toward addressing aviation’s non-CO₂ climate impacts.

The AVENIR Working Group, bringing together experts from over 15 ANSPs, alliances and institutions, has already demonstrated its value in making environmental performance in ATM measurable, reportable and actionable.

Now the AVENIR WG mandate has been extended through 2028 to ensure continuity, wider stakeholder engagement and further development of tools and guidance. It will allow a sustained implementation along with further research and collaboration across the non-CO₂ impacts required for the next phase.

With continued support and clear integration into performance frameworks, the Working Group’s outputs will help position Europe as a leader in sustainable air traffic management.

The AVENIR Working Group is co-chaired by Ian Jopson (NATS), Tamara Pejovic (EUROCONTROL) and Ilona Sitova (EUROCONTROL Maastricht UAC).
