Sofia Airport among Europe’s leaders in Sustainable Aviation Fuel use, What you need to know more?

Sofia Airport has taken a significant step toward sustainable aviation, positioning itself as a leader in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) usage in Europe.

In January 2025, the airport refuelled 11,369.62 tonnes of Jet A1 fuel blended with 2% SAF, with 1,894 aircraft using the sustainable fuel, accounting for 75% of all departing flights.

Jesús Caballero, CEO of SOF Connect, the operator of Sofia Airport, stated: “Sofia Airport is becoming a leader in Europe in the use of sustainable fuel. The successful certification of our fuel farm and SAF refuelling showcase our commitment to greener aviation and significant carbon emission reductions.”

Advancing Carbon Reduction Goals

The successful certification of Sofia Airport’s SAF fuel farm in late 2024 allowed the airport to begin SAF refueling in January 2025. In its first month, the initiative has saved over 600 kilograms of carbon emissions, reinforcing Bulgaria’s commitment to sustainable air transport.

EU SAF Regulations in Force

From January 1, 2025, new European Union regulations mandate that aviation fuel suppliers provide a minimum of 2% SAF as part of their total fuel supply to airports.

SAF includes:

  • Synthetic fuels
  • Biofuels derived from sustainable sources
  • Recycled carbon fuels

These regulations align with the EU’s Fit for 55 strategy, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality in aviation by 2050.

With its early adoption of SAF, Sofia Airport is setting a benchmark for sustainability in European air travel.
