Global Collaboration for a Future in AAM
ICAO Council President Salvatore Sciacchitano emphasized that realizing the potential of AAM requires thoughtful, globally coordinated planning across technology, infrastructure, regulation, and societal needs. “Advanced air mobility will revolutionize the transportation of passengers, goods, and services by reimagining aerial mobility. However, realizing this vision requires careful consideration and planning at a global level, as we navigate the complex interplay of technology, infrastructure, regulation, and societal needs,” he said.
In response to these challenges, the symposium has issued a global Call to Action, urging all stakeholders to work together to accelerate AAM deployment. These efforts are seen as crucial in aligning global safety and sustainability standards in this rapidly evolving sector.
Key Themes and Stakeholders
The event, officially opened by ICAO President Sciacchitano, His Excellency Abdulaziz Bin Abdullah Al Duailej, President of the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) of Saudi Arabia, and His Excellency Prosper Higiro, High Commissioner of the Republic of Rwanda to Canada, placed a strong emphasis on the need for regulatory harmonization and airspace integration.
ICAO is positioning AAM technologies as vital for sustainable development, offering new opportunities in areas like healthcare, agriculture, water supply, wildfire control, and cargo transportation. These technologies, particularly in emerging economies, could serve as a bridge over traditional infrastructure limitations, boosting development through more accessible and efficient aviation solutions.
A Holistic Approach to AAM
ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar further underscored the importance of a comprehensive approach to AAM, urging stakeholders to embrace this paradigm shift. “Through our concerted efforts, we will embrace the numerous opportunities that AAM offers, shaping a future of aviation that is more accessible, efficient, and sustainable,” he noted. The Call to Action prioritizes regulatory interoperability, multilevel cooperation, and continued support for innovation across the entire aviation ecosystem.
In addition, the symposium focused on the need for cooperation among global stakeholders, from public authorities and private sector operators to academic institutions and UN entities. Notably, several UN entities supported ICAO’s initiatives to harmonize UAS frameworks, especially for humanitarian missions such as disaster response, aid delivery, and peacekeeping.
