Qatar plans to attract over 6 million vistors to boost GDP

Qatar is setting an ambitious target for its tourism and travel industry, aiming to contribute 12% to its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2030. This strategic goal is part of Qatar’s broader economic diversification plan, which focuses on reducing reliance on hydrocarbon revenues and fostering growth in other sectors. According to Alpen Capital’s report on the GCC Hospitality Industry, Qatar plans to attract over 6 million visitors annually by the end of the decade.

The country’s growth in tourism is supported by robust government initiatives and the frequent hosting of international events, which are integral to the Qatar National Tourism Strategy 2030. These efforts are designed to position Qatar as a premier global destination, not just for short-term event-based tourism but as a long-term, sustainable tourism hub.

Expanding Hospitality Infrastructure

To accommodate the anticipated surge in tourists, Qatar is investing heavily in its hospitality infrastructure. By the end of 2023, the country had over 36 hotel projects in the pipeline, translating to approximately 8,922 rooms under construction. This expansion comes on the heels of significant growth seen in 2022, where Qatar’s hotel room supply grew to 37,539 keys, accounting for 4.4% of the Gulf Cooperation Council’s (GCC) overall capacity.

From 2017 to 2022, Qatar added 12,372 new hotel rooms, driven largely by the need to support the influx of visitors for the FIFA World Cup 2022. This period saw an impressive Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 8.3% in hotel capacity. The year 2022 alone witnessed an addition of 7,852 keys, marking a remarkable 26.4% annual increase in the country’s hotel room supply.

Sustaining Momentum Post-World Cup

Despite the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup, Qatar continues to attract a growing number of tourists. In 2023, the country welcomed over 4 million visitors, maintaining the momentum generated during the World Cup. However, absorbing the increased hotel supply into the market remains a challenge. The occupancy rate, which stabilized at 57% from 2020 to 2022, reflects the balance between rising demand and the augmented supply of accommodations.

Alpen Capital predicts that it will take some time for the excess hotel supply to be fully absorbed by the increasing tourist demand. Nonetheless, the growth in room capacity is expected to continue at a robust pace, with Qatar leading the GCC in this aspect. The country is projected to achieve a CAGR of 6.3% in room capacity over the next five years, followed by Oman and Bahrain at 4.9%, Saudi Arabia at 3.9%, the UAE at 3.5%, and Kuwait at 3.0%.

Economic Impact and Revenue Growth

The expansion of Qatar’s tourism and hospitality sectors has a profound economic impact. The average Revenue Per Available Room (RevPAR) across the GCC increased from $45.5 in 2020 to $97.2 in 2022, largely driven by Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. Qatar, in particular, saw a significant rise in RevPAR from $56.2 in 2020 to $116.5 in 2022. This growth is attributed to the sharp increase in the Average Daily Rate (ADR) during the FIFA World Cup, which more than compensated for a minor decline in occupancy rates.

Supporting Government Initiatives

Qatar’s government continues to play a pivotal role in promoting tourism through various initiatives and campaigns. These include the “Qatar Clean” program, which ensures high standards of health and safety in hospitality establishments, and the “Qatar National Vision 2030” plan, which aims to enhance the quality of life and build a sustainable, diversified economy.

Furthermore, the country’s strategic location as a global transit hub, coupled with its state-of-the-art airport and airline infrastructure, supports its goal of becoming a top destination for international travelers. Qatar Airways, recognized as one of the world’s leading airlines, plays a crucial role in connecting Qatar to over 160 destinations worldwide, making travel to and from Qatar seamless and convenient.
