Carnival Corp. marks shore power milestone at PortMiami

Shore power has arrived at PortMiami with Carnival Conquest the first ship to hook up.

The ship plugged into landside electrical power at the cruise capital.

The shore power connection is a partnership between Miami-Dade County, Florida Power & Light Company and several cruise companies including Carnival Corp.

PortMiami is now the first major cruise port on the US eastern seaboard offering shore power connections at five cruise berths.

“This is an important milestone for our hometown and we’re proud to support Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and all county and port officials for their partnership,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.

Carnival says it surpassed its 2030 shore power goal in 2023.

It now has 67% of its fleet shore power-capable.

“Using shoreside electricity to power our ships in port is an integral part of our global strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Josh Weinstein, Carnival Corp CEO.

Shore power adoption remains limited to just 2% of cruise ports worldwide.

It can reduce total emissions by up to 98%, depending on the mix of energy sources.

Carnival Corp now has 64 ships equipped with shore power capabilities.

Nearly half of cruise brands have fleets that are 100%, fully shore power-capable.

An additional three ships will be outfitted with shore power connections this year.
