Oasis of the Seas boosts Palma’s cruise tourism

The Oasis of the Seas, recognized as Europe’s largest megacruiser, has initiated its seasonal visits to Palma, marking a significant phase in cruise travel and tourism within the region. From May through October, the ship will anchor in Palma on 22 occasions, delivering upwards of 100,000 tourists to the locale.

Heritage Launched by Royal Caribbean International in 2009, the Oasis of the Seas stands as the pioneering vessel of its own class, earning the title of Cruise of the Year in 2012. The ship presently offers a Mediterranean itinerary that rotates seasonally, enhancing its appeal and accessibility to a global audience.

Offering:

Capacity Catering specifically to couples and families, the Oasis of the Seas was the first cruise ship to surpass the 225,000-ton threshold and boasts a record-setting capacity for 6,300 passengers. This season, it is promoting Mallorca as a key destination, with departures from Barcelona and including ports of call like Rome, Naples, and La Spezia—with optional excursions to Florence—and Southern France, featuring stops in Provence out of Marseille.

Design:

Innovation Constructed by STX Europe in Turku, Finland, under the ambitious Project Genesis, the Oasis of the Seas served as the precursor to what would become a series of six monumental megacruisers equipped with unparalleled onboard facilities. These include an open-air garden street, a lengthy shopping gallery, an ice-skating rink, a multi-tiered theatre, a thrilling water slide, and exclusive loft apartments situated 50 meters above sea level.

Comparison:

Supremacy With dimensions of 362 meters in length and a beam of 47 meters (expanding to 66 meters including the superstructure overhang), the ship was the first in the cruise industry to match the size of the largest oil tankers, surpassing even the largest nuclear aircraft carriers in size. The Oasis class has maintained leadership in scale within the cruise industry until the introduction of the new ‘Icon of the Seas’ this year, which represents the latest class of cruise ships. This Monday, the Oasis of the Seas’ presence in Palma coincided with that of other significant vessels such as the Norwegian Escape and the ultra-luxurious Seven Seas Grandeur, which also made their first appearances in the city.
