Evergreen Fog named Sherwin-Williams COTY

Sherwin-Williams welcomes new beginnings with its 2022 Color of the Year Evergreen Fog SW 9130, a nourishing and sophisticated gray-green. After years of cool neutrals and bold jewel tones, Evergreen Fog ushers in a new era of nostalgic mid-tones.

“Evergreen Fog was chosen as the Color of the Year based on our team’s research of design trends from around the world,” Sue Wadden, director, color marketing, Sherwin-Williams, told InspireDesign. “We’ve been seeing sustainability and organic living, along with neutrals as key design trends including organic textiles and natural materials, which are huge in both residential and commercial spaces right now.”

The past year there’s been an uptick in interest in greens, both anecdotally and in Google and Pinterest search trends. “The green color family is diverse and rich, from calming rich sages like Evergreen Fog to earthier tones and more dramatic emeralds,” she said. “All of our research and these trends helped Evergreen Fog emerge as a clear choice for the 2022 Color of the Year.”

A team of experts of the company conducts a great deal of research to make the choice. “Each year, we go through this larger process where The Sherwin-Williams global forecast team gets together and hashes out what the trends will be through months and months of research and immersion,” said Wadden. “At the end of the process, we come out with our annual Colormix Forecast, which includes the hue that will be the Color of the Year. The 2022 Forecast has four palettes and Evergreen Fog is part of the Method palette that celebrates the balance between organic neutrals and tonal luxury, making it a perfect shade for a number of different spaces.”

The soothing hue is part of the Method palette in the Sherwin-Williams 2022 Colormix Forecast, which embraces creativity, intention and discovery. Wadden recommends pairing the hue with organic neutrals such as Shoji White SW 7042, Accessible Beige SW 7036 and Woven Wicker SW 9104, and tonal luxurious hues such as Urbane Bronze SW 7048, Über Umber SW 9107 and Bakelite Gold SW 6368.

Wadden believes that Evergreen Fog is a great choice for hotel spaces. “After a year that was unlike any other, people are craving an escape—traveling to places that will give them a meaningful experience whether it is to see family, explore a national park or just to relax on the beach,” she said. “Hotels are learning new ways to bring back guests so that they feel comfortable again and looking to make permanent changes from how they clean rooms, to the overall circulation and design of the building.”

She continued, “We know that for health and safety in these environments, customers are looking for natural elements, and the psychological association in commercial spaces has increased. We see lobby spaces taking on more roles than just check-in and moving guests around the hotel. The lobby has become a multifunctional, integral zone within the community and the innovative use of this area provides locals with the ability to use the lobby as a flexible work area, or even to showcase local events or pop-ups.”

Wadden believes that colors can play a role as more focus is placed on lobbies and guestrooms. “Color can either play into the drama with moody dark tones or promote a soothing atmosphere with soft tonal neutrals,” she said. “Evergreen Fog’s versatility lends itself to just about any style in design, from organic modernism to rustic, farmhouse, and everything in between. Because of the versatility of the color, it really can be paired with any style of design and decor to help create the mood you want for a hotel property whether a room or a lobby.”
