EARTH RAINBOW

We caught up with Photo Artist Michael Banks about his latest work for the hospitality space. Inspired by the world around us, “Earth Rainbow” communicates an eco-conscious mindset in a way that’s approachable to all: art.

What inspired these designs?

Our planet. There is so much current dialogue about our beautiful, precious and fragile home planet right now, from
climate change, rising sea levels, pollution and the general fact that we are progressively breaking through all the limits
on various planetary tipping-points which will ultimately put our entire species at risk. Sadly it can become a very abstract concept, the idea of the end of our world, so it still isn’t being taken seriously by a lot of people who are in a position of power and who could change things. The need for economic profit is 100% at odds with taking care of our own living context.

Where did the name come from?

I wanted to combine a direct reference to our own Earth in the name, as well as including an upbeat, positive reference— hence the bright and happy rainbow colors. Talking eco can sometimes get a bit depressing, so this is fun and uplifting,
referring visually both to the circle, globe form that we easily associate with our planet, as well as a natural phenomenon that we have all observed while being here.

What role does art play in the hospitality space? How is it keeping employees and guests optimistic?

I am actively trying to produce photo artwork that is “experience-enhancing” for the viewer, so that the piece is not just a fleeting moment of aesthetic pleasure—which is actually fine in any case—but also an opportunity for a guest to meditate a little on what they are looking at, caressing the art not only with their eyes but with their brains too. Hospitality spaces often function as a relaxing retreat from the immediate rush and buzz of the outside, and I think artwork is crucial to that process of slowing down, calming down, chilling out and getting in touch with our quieter selves.

Are you finding anything challenging in your career right now?

Clearly, the hospitality industry has taken a battering in the last 16 months since COVID began. A lot of new-builds and renovations are on hold, so that is challenging for all people involved in the sector, including me as an art supplier.
Personally, I have tried to produce new image series with the same frequency as previously, have religiously maintained contact with all my clients through mailings and updates, have been flexible on pricing and staying visible on platforms such as LinkedIn and Instagram. I always get out of bed in the morning with a positive, go-get attitude, and try to keep that going all day. Hey, life is still great, and still a wonderful gift.
