Panama Canal 2020: Challenges and Opportunities for the Decade Ahead

In this webinar, moderated by Seatrade Chairman, Chris Hayman, we bring together industry experts who can give the best oversight of the Panama Canal in 2020 and looking ahead to the next 10 years in its prime position as a conduit to maritime trade.

Panama and the Pandemic:  the slowdown in global trade, the re-configuration of services, and a consequent reduction in transits for some vessel types have all impacted on traffic movement in 2020. What is the significance of these changes and how has the Canal Authority responded to this unique set of circumstances?

Water - the next priority:  climate change and a massive hike in domestic consumption present a challenge to the maintenance of water levels necessary for the reliable transit of ships. The solution will involve the development of a water management system comparable to that of the third set of locks in scale and cost. What are the options for resolving the issue, what is the timetable for implementation and how will this multi-billion dollar engineering project be financed?

LNG - cargo for the future:  As the volume of LNG trade through the Canal increases what has driven this growth and will disruptions to global trading patterns, including commercial relationships between the US and China, affect the prospects for LNG tanker transits in the future?

The customer’s perspective:  the Panama Canal Authority is committed to a continuous programme of increasing service levels.  The views of the end-users on satisfaction levels and transparency,

Bunkering flexibility:  bunker sales at both ends of the Canal grew strongly in 2019.  What are the prospects for 2020 and how have bunker suppliers responded to the implementation of the IMO’s 2020 sulphur regulations?  As a key aspect of the maritime economy of the region, how can greater flexibility be achieved for bunkering operations and vessels?

Oil demand and the tanker sector: following the deep disruption to oil trading in 2020, what is the outlook for both crude oil and product tanker trading?

This is the 3rd webinar in a 3-part series in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Panama Maritime Review which has seen all aspects of this busy maritime and shipping sector discussed, analysed and reviewed; as well as some of the top names in the industry interviewed.
