BRUSSELS - With the COVID-19 pandemic, many structural issues of European transport were laid bare, further exacerbated by this extraordinary situation. While some action has been taken by the European Commission to address the issues, much more is required to ensure the safety and wellbeing of transport workers.
Today, ETF addressed another letter to the European transport Commissioner Adina-Ioana Vălean. They shared important developments persisting in the different sectors, their views and requests for action.
In addition to the updates, ETF urged the Commission to move the deadline for presenting the new smart and sustainable transport strategy that is currently planned for the third quarter of 2020.
The current circumstances will not allow for a proper consultation of stakeholders and member states. If the necessary time for an inclusive and democratic consultation is not allotted, this could result in yet another unsustainable transport policy that would further worsen the problems that are affecting their workers as well the sector’s transition towards the objectives of the European Green Deal.
