Russia might not be a typical popular vacation destination, but it’s certainly one that’s worth adding to your travel bucket list. During seven days in Russia, you can see a huge amount of unique sights and attractions that you can’t find anything like anywhere else, along with a myriad of experiences that you’ll remember for the rest of your life. Whether you want to visit for the culture, the architecture, people, food, churches, history, art, or the famous vodka - Russia is a destination not to be missed. So what can’t you miss out on during your week in this fabulous country? We’ve put together a list of our top picks for a trip to Russia that will be the envy of your friends.
Moscow Kremlin
The apex of political power in Russia, the Kremlin is at the center of not just Moscow but the entire country. Once heading the Orthodox Church, a list of communist dictators, aristocratic tsars and modern presidents have done their best and their worst for the country. The building itself is enclosed by high walls that stretch for over two kilometers and you can get the best views of the entire complex from Sofiyskya, located across the river. It’s included on several walking tours of the capital or you can book a private tour to explore the Kremlin in more detail.
Grand Palace
Although a very imposing and significant building, the Grand Palace may not be as large as you’d typically expect with only thirty rooms. It is opened to foreign tourists from the beginning of June until early in September at certain times during the afternoon, and open all day for guided tours in Russian. You are welcome to join a Russian-speaking tour if you’d prefer to go off and explore the palace on your own.
Winter Palace
One of the most iconic sights in St Petersburg, the Winter Palace is a dominating attraction in Palace Square, standing as a symbol of the cultural, artistic and historical inheritance of the city. The palace cake to life in 1708, when it was a Dutch-style wooden home built for the family of Peter the Great. Subsequently, the palace was transformed into the ornate, extravagant and colorful building that it is in the present day. Inside, the palace contains stunningly intricate marble work, stupendous grand staircases and beautiful gold-leafed trims that visitors are left in awe of.
Alexander Garden
Russia isn’t all about historic buildings and monuments - if you’d like to take a moment to get lost in nature then Alexander Garden is an ideal place to visit. Once a popular leisure spot for St. Petersburg’s aristocracy, the garden was designed in the 1800s to honor the day that would have been Peter the Great’s 200th birthday. Alexander II officially opened the garden in 1874 and requested over 50 species of plants. The garden was refurbished significantly during the 1920s and today it’s a peaceful sanctuary open to visitors all year around. It’s a must visit for any trips to St. Petersburg (Russia)
