Expedition cruising is flourishing as the trend for adventure, connection and exploration rises amongst travelers and drives the need for new and interesting destinations across the globe. Many cruise lines have invested heavily in a range of newbuild vessels especially developed for expedition cruising with expedition ships accounting for almost one-third of the order book.

In response to the importance of expedition to the cruise industry, Seatrade will be launching its new brand ‘Seatrade Cruise Expedition’, at Seatrade Cruise Global, Miami, in April 2020 and at Seatrade Cruise Med in Malaga in September 2020.
The launch will create the opportunity for the global community involved in this exciting new growth sector and those looking to enter it to meet and share dialogue, learn, explore new opportunities and network.
The number of expedition focused suppliers exhibiting at Seatrade Cruise Global has been growing consistently over the last few years and the 2020 event in Miami is likely to see more take-up in addition to expanded dedicated conference sessions.
2019 expedition-focused conference sessions at Seatrade Cruise Global welcomed moderators and speakers from industry leaders such as Intercruises Shoreside & Port Services, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, Ponant, Silversea Cruises and Expedition Voyage Consultants Ltd. Conference titles included:
- Best Practices For Building A Robust Expedition Team
- State of the Expedition Cruise Market
- Transforming Shore Excursions To Deliver Authentic And Exclusive Experiences
Seatrade Cruise Med will include specially curated content and a dedicated area on the show floor for shipyards, designers, suppliers, new ports, destinations and shorex providers to showcase their expedition products and services.
The remarkable increase in expedition travel has not only been due to consumer demand but also the introduction of new safety requirements of the Polar Code and new owners and investors entering the sector.
Over 40 expedition newbuilds are planned for delivery between 2019-2022 from 17 different owners including luxury cruise lines building to meet consumer demand.
Popular destinations include Antarctica, The Arctic, Galapagos Islands, Australia, The Amazon, Indonesia, and Alaska, all offering various shorex activities and cruise experiences.
Cruise lines are also working hard to revolutionize the creation of itineraries which focus on far-flung destinations to feed passenger appetite for exciting new experiences and unique locations.
