British Airways has proposed a plan to develop a site in northeast Lincolnshire which will be first plant of its kind in Europe that will turn everyday household and commercial waste into sustainable fuels.

This will be in collaboration with oil giant Royal Dutch Shell and Altalto Immingham Limited, a subsidiary of renewable fuels company Velocys.

In a year around 500,000 tonnes of waste will be taken by the plant that will include non-recyclable waste such as meal packaging, nappies and takeaway coffee cups which will be further concerted into sustainable jet fuel.

The project if approved will start the construction of the plant in 2021 and will be able to produce aviation fuel three years later.

It has been claimed by the British Airways that the fuel will  cut the amount of soot comi9ng out of the aircraft engine exhaust by 90 per cent. It will also cut sulphur dioxide that is being sent into the air by aircraft.

Alex Cruz, British Airways chairman and CEO said that sustainable fuels can be a game changer for aviation which will help power our aircraft for years to come.

The development will reduce the carbon emission and meet industry targets of carbon neutral growth from 2020 and a 50 per cent in carbon dioxide reduction by 2050 from 2005 levels.

It will also leverage UK as the a global leader in sustainable aviation fuels.

A total of $400m will be invested by International Airlines Group, the parent group of British Airways on alternative sustainable fuel development over the next 20 years.
