Costa Rica to impose complete ban on polystyrene

Due to environmental concerns over the packaging material Costa Rica is set to ban the import and sale of polystyrene.

It will come into effect from 2021 as it was signed into law earlier this week. It will be the same year the government stated that the country will become the first plastic –free and carbon-free country in the world.

Polystyrene or Styrofoam ( as  known in U.S) is mostly used for packaging and transporting food because of its lightness, low production costs and hygiene.

But it is not biodegradable and the crumbly material breaks down into damaging micro plastics, these enter the waterways and oceans and are consumed by the marine creatures.

The production of polystyrene is hazardous to humans and those exposed to its component during production can develop irritations or might suffer from other effects.

In waterways and seas the chemicals get diffused, it contaminates the water and the animals we eat.

According to the government in Costa Rica the  country covers just 0.03 per cent of the Earth’s surface, but is home to about 4 per cent of the species on the planet. It has a unique biodiversity and has the country’s strongest assets while plastic is considered to be the major threat to it.

The government is expected to promote and encourage the reconversion of industries working in the import and manufacture of containers or packaging made up of expanded polystyrene. This will encourage the development of environmentally friendly alternatives.

Carlos Alvardao Quesda, Costa Rica said that it was important to make changes in both their minds and their action so that they can protect the natural environment and human health.

He went on saying that they have to prove that Costa Alvardo Quesada will fight to safeguard the fundamental rights like right to health. They are also sending the message that these actions evidence their administration’s compromise to achieve the decarbonisation of their economy.
