Turkish Airlines announced that the national carrier will move all of its flights at Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport to the new Istanbul Airport on April 6.
Turkish Airlines will end all scheduled flights at Ataturk Airport as of April 6 at 2.00 a.m. local time (April 5, 2300GMT) and will resume all flight operations planned for Ataturk Airport from its new hub at Istanbul New Airport as of the afternoon of April 6 at 14.00 local time (1100GMT).
The airport, which officials say will be one of the world’s busiest, was declared open in October by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan but only a handful of flights have been operating from the new site since then.
The construction of the 3rd İstanbul Airport officially started on May 4, 2015 and is scheduled to finish in 2023. Its first stage out of six was opened on October 29, 2018.
The airport will be able to handle 90 million passengers a year, and can be expanded to accommodate as many as 200 million, Erdogan said at the opening ceremony.
