WTTC: UK is fifth most powerful travel and tourism nation

The power ranking conducted by the World Travel and Tourism Council ranked UK as the world’s fifth most powerful country for travel and tourism.

The council combined the growth over the past seven years in tourism contribution to GDP, international visitor spend, domestic tourism spend and capital investment.

China topped the list and was followed by US, India and Mexico while the UK was above Spain, Turkey, Canada, Indonesia, Australia and UAE.

The performance of 185 countries over the last seven years were considered and as per WTTC the inclusion of domestic spend and investment provided a rounded measure of performance and prioritization as compared to the usual measures of GDP contribution and international spend.

WTTC president and CEO Gloria Guevara mentioned that the organisation outlined power and performance rankings reflecting the countries successful in growing the tourism sector across the globe.

There was another performance ranking of countries where travel and tourism grew mostly quickly when the percentage terms was considered over the past seven years. Myanmar,Iraq, Georgia,Rwanda,Iceland,Nicaragua,Qatar, Congo, Armenia, Ivory Coast were among the countries maximized the opportunity of tourism to drive the economic growth.

It was noted that the G20 countries dominated the list by being 12 of the top 20 countries that was on top of the list showing the importance of travel and tourism to mature markets and global economy.

The up-and-coming countries showed how tourism facilitates developing economies.  As per WTTC  strong travel policies, sustainable and proactive planning and robust infrastructure helps in growth . Taking Indonesia as an example travel and tourism can grow where there is radical visa reform along with rapid growth in international tourist arrivals in the past seven years.

The countries which work strategically to capiatlise on the economic benefits of the travel and tourism sector and considers opportunity for continued growth is recognized by the WTTC.
