A massive explosion close to Cairo International Airport in Egypt has injured 12 people as thick plumes of smoke were seen billowing from the scene and photographs of the incident were widely shared all across social media platforms.

A leading news source mentioned that the last seems to be at the structure of a used store fuel.

Younis al-Mistry who is the civil aviation minister of Egypt said that the blast had occurred at fuel tanks outside the perimeter of the airport. He said air movement at the airport had been ‘unaffected’.

An Egyptian army spokesperson later mentioned that the explosion was the consequence of high temperatures close to the tanks.

The blast was loud enough to be audible across large portions of the city. This incident would further raise tensions in the country with the airport the scene of a terror attack which claimed the lives of all 224 passengers on board Metrojet Flight 9268 in 2015, which an investigation suggested was the result of a bomb smuggled on board.

Egyptian state television is reporting that a fire raging as a result of the explosion had been brought under control, and that the tanks belonged to a private company, which was not identified.

Television pictures also showed ambulances racing towards the scene of the blast.

There is no confirmation so far of any casualties.

Younis al-Mistry confirmed that the fuel dump has exploded, but offered no additional information.
