Recently, UNESCO has informed the cruise lines to initiate more into protecting cities witnessing heavy tourism like Venice and Dubrovnik and to develop cleaner ships. As we all know that Dubrovnik has been struggling to adjust with the influx in the number of cruise ship passengers that get off through the summer month. Of late, many tourism institutions have been engaged to find a solution to this issue. The mayor rather controversially declared last year that the number of tourists allowed inside the historic Old City of Dubrovnik would be limited; this was a major step to limit the chaos of recent years.
The UNESCO director world heritage, Mechtild Rössler, has blamed the cruise industry in terms of poor standards and endorsing the overcrowding that is wiping out many prominent cultural landmarks of Europe.
Dr Rössler’s comments come as port cities in the Mediterranean and Adriatic are all set to combat the annual rush of cruise tourists and follow the maiden voyages of two new giant liners. In April Norwegian Bliss, carrying 4,000 passengers sailed from Southampton. The 6,680-passengerSymphony of the Seas, the largest cruise ship of the world, left Barcelona last year. Environmental activists and anti-tourism groups have protested against the cruise sector as well.
