In Japan, Airbnb has entered into a brand new partnership with FamilyMart that represents a leading convenience store chains brand in Japan to permit hosts to leave their keys in special lock boxes at the stores for pickup by guests.

The service would commence next month as reported by a Japanese media house on Monday.

Guests would be able to check in to their Airbnb by verifying their information like passport details using a tablet. Once their identities are confirmed a lock box would open along with keys.

At the end of their stay guests can also return keys at the stores.

FamilyMart is optimistic that the service would reach as many as 150 stores mostly in Osaka and Tokyo by February next year.

This move comes ahead of an expected tourist surge in the nation as the 2020 Tokyo Olympics looms in the upcoming period. Along with FamilyMart, Airbnb had earlier joined Lawson that is another chain of convenience stores to start offering the same service at different outlets in Tokyo in January.

Users will be able to confirm their identities by connecting to a call center via tablets located close to the boxes.

Japanese convenience stores have been improving their efforts to cater to travelers staying in private homes, as the new law will allow property owners in Japan to rent out vacant homes or rooms to tourists for up to 180 days per year after registering with local municipalities.
