London has topped the list of the most Instagrammed cities in Europe, with Paris and Barcelona forming the top three, according to new research by car hire company Hertz Europe.
The English capital is officially the most photogenic European city, with more than 90.9m photos taken on the popular social network at the time of the research. The “City of love,” Paris, came in a close second with 76.9m images taken and Barcelona had 34.9m captures on Instagram. The top ten list also includes Moscow (33.4m), Berlin (26.7m) and Rome (16.6m). To celebrate Hertz’s Centenary, the brand also delved into 100 of the most popular attractions across five high-ranking cities to discover just what the most instagrammable landmarks are in each location.
In London, it was Big Ben that sat at the top of the list, with 2.7m images. The London Eye (2.2m), Tower Bridge (1.4m), Westminster (926,579) and Buckingham Palace (729,517) were the four other most popular attractions on the social network.
The research concluded that Berlin’s most popular landmark for Instagrammers is predictably, the Berlin Wall (577,231), while the public square Alexanderplatz (359,541) comes in second. Other popular places for snaps include Fernsehturm (337,742), the television tower, East Side Gallery (271,431), and the Reichstag building (202,808).
Over the border in Paris, the Champs Elysees (5.5m) beat the Eiffel Tower (4.1m) as the most popular attraction in the capital, making it the most Instagrammed attraction in Europe. Every child’s favourite place, Disneyland Paris (2.1m) came in third on the list, followed by the Louvre gallery (2m) and Notre-Dame Cathedral (1.5m).
In Rome, the Vatican had 1.3m photos taken, while the Colosseum netted 901,308 images. The historic Pantheon (558,370) was the third most Instagrammed attraction followed by the exquisite Trevi Fountain (491,224).
The breath-taking La Sagrada Familia by Gaudi was the top landmark in Barcelona with 1.5m snaps. As a famous footballing city, it’s no surprise that FC Barcelona’s stadium Camp Nou came in second with 1m pictures, while the rocky range Montserrat was third with 498,653.
