According to R. Edwin Samuel of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Thoothukudi, it is very important to tap the cruise tourism potential along the East Coast.

With popular tourist hotspots like Kanyakumari, located on the southernmost tip of the country, the Thoothukudi coast, and places enroute Rameshwaram coast, the authorities can open up avenues for boosting tourism in the region.

Recreational ferry service can be launched in these coastal districts, and this will be an added advantage to the tourism industry as sea voyage will attract foreign visitors to the region.

Potential sites such as Muttom seashore with its natural sand dunes and an amazing lighthouse nearby, the seaside Vattakottai Fort, Subramaniayaswamy Temple in Tiruchendur, Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Snows and Sacred Hearts Cathedral in Thoothukudi, the historical monuments in Manapad and the Ramanatha Swami temple in Rameswaram can herald a new chapter in tourism. Tourists can also take a day out in the marine biosphere in the Gulf of Mannar.

A new rail route should be created along the East Coast on a par with East Coast Road (ECR) to expand tourism up to Velankanni in Nagapattinam district. With en route attractions like Danishpet and Karaikal, the entire stretch of ECR needed to be a four-way traffic.

The State government should explore possibilities of such tourism developments and also include them in the ‘Vision Tamil Nadu 2023 Document’, according to Mr. Samuel.
