As the hot summer vacation travel season simmered off and came to a close in August, Orlando International Airport (MCO) enjoyed a double-digit boost in the number of passengers moving through the facilities. For the month, overall traffic climbed more than 11 percent lead by strong domestic growth.
“For the peak summer vacation travel months, we recorded a 9 percent increase in overall traffic, which is a phenomenal rate of growth,” says Phil Brown, Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority. “This kind of achievement would not be possible if it were not for our airline partners who have increased seats and service while introducing exciting new routes into this market.”
Compared to August of 2016, the airlines have added more than 2,100 domestic flights into MCO and more than 260 international flights.
The airlines registering the largest gains in service were Frontier, Southwest, Spirit and LATAM. Virgin America also doubled the amount of flights it offered in August.
August Statistical Data:
Domestic traffic increased 11.82 percent in August with 3,236,989 passengers arriving and departing MCO
International traffic climbed 7.29 percent with 594,698 passengers
Overall passenger volume was up 11.09 percent with a total of 3,831,687 travelers at MCO
The August passenger numbers pushed Orlando International Airport to over 43.8 million passengers on a rolling 12-month basis, which is another record
In total there were 2376 additional flights into MCO in August bringing the total number of scheduled flights to just under 27 thousand for the month.
With more than 43 million annual passengers, MCO is the second busiest airport in Florida and 13th busiest in the U.S. The airport is centrally located and within a two hour drive for 60 percent of the state’s residents. MCO has more than 18,000 employees and generates in excess of $31 billion in revenue for the regional economy. Orlando International Airport strives to value and delight its customers through an airport-wide design concept known as The Orlando Experience®.
