The growing intensity of Hurricane Irma has triggered a crucial decision by the authorities of American Airlines.
The airlines have decided to cancel certain flights to the Caribbean and instead add some additional flights for travellers making attempts to get out of the islands before the storm hits. The extra flights are out of St. Maarten, St. Kitts and would be all departing before the storm arrives in full swing.
Flights scheduled for the period between 6th and 7th September to those islands have all been cancelled.
A stamen from American Airlines mentions that customers would be able to get in touch with their reservations team to rebook their tickets. They added that their integrated operations hub in Fort Worth, Texas continues to monitor the track of the storm very closely and they plan to make certain additional changes to their scheduled as the storm continues to track west.
The airlines also issued a travel alert for as many as eight airports in this area because of the storm.
Other airlines have also started cancelling flights to the Caribbean including British Airways as per the news media agencies in the United Kingdom. Hurricane Irma has now strengthened as a Category 5 storm as it roars on towards the northeastern portion of Caribbean towards the U.S.
