The Athens International Airport had over 85,000 people few days back in July that majorly comprised dissatisfied Liverpool fans with sore heads and sunburned backs.

The airport’s busiest day was May 24, 2007 until July 27 this year. This was the day after the Champions League final that took place between AC Milan and Liverpool in Athens. The Italian side proved to be victorious with 2-1. However, the English fans had a much better time in the city, relishing the weather and satisfying their thirst.

To note, the record which was broken proved to be a positive sign for the tourism industry of Greece. Back in May 2007, over 60,000 people witnessed Europe’s top soccer match. Thousands of fans came to Athens in the expectation of getting tickets for the game. This was kind of a rare event that happened in Athens. However, on July 27, the city airport witnessed over 85,987 people thrashing the record of the earlier times after more than 10 years by about 700 passengers.

In July, more than 2.37 million passengers passed through the airport of Athens. This was a rise of 7.7 percent in comparison to the same time last year. More than 11 million people were seen in the first seven months of this year, with 7 million passengers’ taking international flights which is 8.2 percent up on the same period in 2016.
