The US domestic leisure trips is gaining more importance and the trend had a huge increase since past year.

As per the MMGY’s 2017 Portrait of the American Traveler report found that US travellers took nearly 14 million more trips in the United States than international trips in the one year survey ending in February.

The reports suggested political scenarios and safety abroad were the reason behind the increase. A survey on around 3000 US leisure travellers from 18 years and above revealed that domestic vacations made 85% of total vacations by the Americans. The data was 7% more than last year.

Those belonging to the annual household income of $50,000 or more took one leisure trip 75 miles or more from home and opted for overnight accommodations during the year.

The survey done by MMGY in 2016 had 34% of US travellers said that their domestic vacations were to new destinations, while 40% planned a vacation to a place where they had never been.

Steve Cohen, vice president of insights at the marketing agency said that Terrorism had a major influence on the people who travel less , also domestic travel is more convenient for people than international.

The respondents were inquired about which US cities and regions they wished to see during the next two years. New York City, Las Vegas being among the ten cities having the highest percentage of interest had less interest this year.

During the next two years the respondents expressed interest in visiting 20 destinations, down from 16 destinations in 2016.

Cohen further added the scenario is pretty well if the interest in destination is down by fewer than 20% points year-over-year.
