Celebrity Introduces Jaw-Dropping New Lounge

Remember when the most innovative thing you expected to find on a cruise ship was a water slide? This week, Celebrity Cruise Lines announced plans for Eden, a huge, glass-enclosed space aboard the currently-under-construction Celebrity Edge which will offer everything from a restaurant to an interactive show. “It will have performance, it will have food and beverage, it’ll have fantastic views of the ocean,” says the space’s architect, Scott Butler, in a promotional video released this week. “It’s a lounge, however, everything is raised to the level of an art.” While the ship will not debut until the fall of 2018, here’s a look at what you can expect to find in the stunning space known as Eden.

The Space

In a way, the space defies standard definitions. And how people experience the space will depend on when they visit it. “During the day,” says Butler, “it will be a place of serenity. Because it is an outward facing space, you’re always wanting to look out and watch the coastline as it recedes. You see a glass window that is three decks high and the width of the ship, it’s quite awe inspiring.”
In the afternoon, he continues, “when everyone’s coming back to the ship, there’s a certain euphoria and a desire to have a drink and be a little more social. People can go down and participate in an experience [in a show kitchen] where they learn how foods are prepared.”
Even the simple experience of getting a cocktail will be taken to a new level. “Your garnishes are growing behind you in the library of plants,” says Butler. “So then, to make it a performance, bartenders can climb up little ladders and retrieve that sprig and brint it down and flake it off into your drink.”

Dinner And A Show

But it is at night that Eden will morph into a truly unique experience for guests. “The entire space comes to life,” says Butler. “So it really turns from an outward facing space to an inward facing space. The restaurant isn’t an individual entity within the space, it’s part of the experience.”

And once your meal is over, don’t think it’s time to head to bed… because the night is only just beginning. “Once they’re concluded with their meal,” previews Gallagher, “they’ll be led out of Eden and brought somewhere up on the ramp to have a sweet, a confection or a drink. There will always be an element of surprise. Guests have to leave saying, ‘That was something that I’ve never experienced before that was absolutely outstanding and I want to come back.’”

Magic Carpet, also debuting on Celebrity Edge.

As for the show which will unfold within Eden’s space, David Ley, Celebrity Edge’s Eden Entertainment director, says it will “engage all of the senses.” He excitedly admits that rather than sticking to the standard entertainment one might expect to find on board a cruise, “we’ve actually been invited to break so many of the rules.”
Even entering the show will be unconventional. “The way into the experience is going to be guided almost literally by hand,” says Ley, “by these characters that we’re referring to as Edenists. It’s literally Eden come to life.”
“You’re not sure if you’re in the performance or watching the performance!,” says Butler, concluding that, “People are going to come away from Eden saying that there’s nothing like it on land or on a ship!”
