Tourists to Western Romania outnumber its inhabitants in 2016


A certain city in Western Romania named Cluj-Napoca had welcomed as much as 370,000 tourists in the year 2016 that marks a 15% rise in the tourism figures of 2015, according to a local media.

The latest census states that the city had lured in about 325,000 residents.

Oana Buzatu who is a spokesperson with the Cluj-Napoca City Hall said that the total number of tourists who had arrived here actually outnumbered their number of local residents.

Out of the total number of visitors, about a quarter were international tourists.

Cluj-Napoca had received about 99,131 foreign tourists in the year 2016, as per the data from the Cluj Country Statistics Department. Many of the tourists had come from neighbouring nations like Poland (6,270), France (7,293), Germany (11,717) and Hungary (14,903).

Cluj-Napoca is not only a premier business center.

However, currently, it has transformed into a popular destination for grand events like the Transylvania International Film Festival TIFF and music festival Untold. The Untold festival had attracted as much as 30,000 foreign tourists at the 2016 edition, as per the General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI).

Some of the most frequented sites in this city are the Cetăţuia Hill, Museum Square, Central Park, Botanical Garden and so on.

This year, the local authorities expect a thriving tourism industry thanks to the rising number of tourists. They are planning to invest €2 million in the local tourism sector for the purpose of creating better pedestrian areas and also to launch brand new tourism sites.

Even in terms of air traffic, Cluj-Napoca had reported ‘record’ numbers in 2016 that comprises about 1.9 million passengers in 2016 marking a 25% rise on 2015.
