The northernmost region of the country of Finland, namely Lapland has been a proud spectator of a robust tourism industry last year, as it saw an arrival of more than 2.6 million overnight stays by the tourists who visited this part of the globe. The stays by travellers from abroad had increased by about 18%.
On the other hand, the stays by the Finns rose by nearly 9% in 2016.
The greatest boost to the tourism industry had come from the growth of tourists who had arrived from the countries of the Asian continent. The overnight stays by Asian travellers had catapulted by nearly 50%.
On the other hand, the stays by Chinese tourists by Chinese tourists had doubled from the levels of the year 2015.
The Finnish region of Lapland has always been as the traditional Christmas seasonal vacation locale for a large number of tourists mainly from the UK. In a sharp contrast, the number of overnight stays by Russian tourists had slumped by nearly a quarter.
In general, the Christmas season was great for the tourism sector.
It had actually risen by 20% from the previous year. The official figures from Statistics Finland said the average overnight stays in Lapland costs about 130 euroes while elsewhere in the country it generally costs about 100 euros.
