American Airlines has decided to switch their Wi-Fi service provider Gogo to a more speedy service provider ViaSat. The new Wi-Fi will be introduced on more than 500 domestic flights of the airline.
American Airlines authorities have declared about the change on Wednesday, 9th November. The airline has also informed that the installation of the new system on the jets may take years. According to a spokeswoman for ViaSat, the airline will begin the installation from summer of 2017.
ViaSat is already providing Wi-Fi service on the flights of JetBlue Airways and it has been found that the American Airlines is the second airline to opt for the service.
The airline has previously informed during June’16 that they will outfit around 100 Boeing 737 Max aircraft with latest technology.
Gogo has been the biggest in-flight Wi-Fi provider for over a decade but the technology that they use is comparatively slower than that of ViaSat. ViaSat uses satellites to provide the Wi-Fi service, where Gogo uses cell-phone towers to provide Wi-Fi facility on the domestic flights.
According to Martha Thomas, the spokeswoman for American Airlines, as more customers bring and use Wi-Fi enabled devices onboard, they are constantly looking for ways to improve their in-flight Wi-Fi service to give the passengers the best experience possible.
The airline has also informed that the regional flights will keep using Gogo and as per a deal with the airline Gogo will install 2KU, their next-generation satellite Wi-Fi on almost 140 flights of the American Airlines.
Thomas has also informed that American Airlines is using three Wi-Fi providers including Gogo, ViaSat and Panasonic on their jets to upgrade their fleet with the latest and fastest Wi-Fi service as quickly as possible.
The CEO of ViaSat, Mark Dankberg has informed that they anticipate that their North American airline expansion will impact the industry in a way that is good for both the passengers and the airlines and they also believe it is becoming more evident that more passengers are expressing their preference for good connectivity when given the choice on competitive routes.
