US travellers have been dominating tourism spending in the region of Asia-Pacific, having spent about $231.6 billion in 2015. It seems that they would retain this leading position till as long as 2020.
The Pacific Asia Travel Association has released this report. The report states that US tourists would be spending about $257 billion in this part of the world by 2020 and it would dominate about 28.1% of the market share. Compared to the US, the Chinese tourists have spent $30 billion in this region in 2015. According to the report, China would spend about $72 billion by 2020, dominating about 8% of the market share.
This implies that Chinese travellers would spend a much lesser amount on travel in the Asia-Pacific region. Mario Hardy, CEO, Pacific Asia Travel Association said that Chinese travellers travel more often and generally for shorter periods of time. This marks a contrast with the travel spending by US travellers.
This is the reason why the average spending of Chinese tourists are lesser.
Moreover, Chinese travellers prefer all-inclusive package tours while US travellers are among the more experienced tourists who love booking their own flights, hotels and other activities. On the other hand, Chinese tourists are more likely to spend a higher amount on a luxury restaurant.
A report released by Fung Business Intelligence Centre and China Luxury Advisors have stated that the outbound travel of Chinese tourists would reach $422 billion by 2020, and a majority of the Chinese travel spending would take place outside Asia-Pacific.
