Visitors and locals create a giant Human Whale in Port Stephens

More than 1000 locals and visitors today gathered on Port Stephens’ sun-blessed Shoal Bay Beach to form the outline of a giant, 100m-long humpback whale – Sunday, July 3, 2016.

Coinciding with the beginning of the winter school holidays and Port Stephens’ annual winter Naturefest – a program of events showcasing the area’s unique natural beauty – the annual Human Whale event is now in its fifth year and runs in recognition of whale conservation and the booming whale-watching season.

More than 20,000 humpbacks are expected to trace the local coast this winter during their annual migration.

Event spokesman, Frank Future, from Imagine Cruises, said the human whale this year would be registered with the Guinness Book of Records as the largest human whale ever formed.

“The event this year was a big success with perfect weather and people, including lots of families, coming from everywhere to help form the shape of the whale on the beach,” Mr Future said. It was just spectacular. Everyone loves whales and Port Stephens is lucky to see so many of them every year which is why we celebrate their presence this way every winter.”
