The Segway PT scooters have been completely banned in the Czech Republic’s capital, Prague. Prague City Hall has completely banned Segway scooters in the city’s historic city centre and some other parts of the city.
Protests from locals have prompted the ban. Tourists were seen riding the two-wheeler through the narrow cobbled streets and walkways of Prague’ city centre.
Earlier this week Barcelona had also banned the Segway in its waterfront promenade.
Segways are a two-wheeled, self balancing, battery powered electric vehicle. Computers, sensors, and electric motors in the base of the Segway PT keep the device upright when powered on with balancing enabled. The rider commands the PT to go forward or backward by shifting their weight forward or backward on the platform.
Prague’s picturesque downtown is on the list of UNESCO’s World Heritage sites and is visited by millions of tourists every year. City Hall said Tuesday the ban will also affect parts of Prague’s 3rd, 4th, 7th and 8th districts, including streets and roads. It will become effective in two weeks while signs about the ban will be placed in the affected areas by Sept 1.
Association Segway CR Jaroslav Endrst, has been reported to have said that they are considering a legal complaint against the ban.
