Golfers’ rankings name Son Gual as Spain’s number 2

Mallorca’s top golf venue, Son Gual, is now ranked the number two club in Spain overall – that’s the verdict of Leadingcourses.com’s ‘Golfers’ Choice’ rankings for 2016.

The rankings are compiled from more than 300,000 reviews from golfers across Europe, and Son Gual, which opened only in 2007, scored an impressive 9.1 and leaped 11 places to number two, behind only the host of the 1997 Ryder Cup, Valderrama, in a country which features almost 450 courses. They are based upon numerous aspects influencing the quality of the golf club: the course itself, the overall impression of the club, maintenance, facilities, service, clubhouse and the perceived value for money.

Son Gual’s general manager, Andreas Pamer, said: “It is always a pleasure to learn that Son Gual has won an award or achieved a high place in a ranking, but it is especially rewarding when that accolade is achieved through the votes or reviews of the general public, the people who part with their money to enjoy a few hours at our venue.

“Golfers are spoilt for choice when it comes to top quality golf clubs in Spain and for Son Gual to rank second in their minds is an achievement of which we are especially proud.”

Founded in 2007, Leadingcourses.com now has 300,000-plus reviews, 20,000 golf clubs and 24,000 golf courses mapped in more than 125 countries, with in excess of 250,000 visitors each month.

The latest Leadingcourses.com accolade reinforces Son Gual’s standing as the number-one golf destination in Mallorca, a status confirmed last year when it jumped two places to 42 in the Golf World Top 100 Golf Courses in Continental Europe 2015/16 ranking.

The €30m Thomas Himmel-designed 7,240-yards, par-70 course was also acclaimed last year as ‘best golf course’ by the World of Leading Golf, a corporation representing some of the globe’s most distinctive clubs.

Already a regular celebrity haunt – visitors have included German FIFA World Cup-winning captain Lothar Matthäus; German national football manager Joachim Löw; the former mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg; and tennis’ 14-time grand-slam event winner Rafael Nadal – Son Gual is also now the European base for logicalgolf® founder and ‘coach to the stars’ Robert Baker, whose client list has included Greg Norman, Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Sean Connery, Samuel L Jackson, Sylvester Stallone and US Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.
