UNWTO to present the first Global Conference on Wine Tourism

UNWTO announced its activities in the World Travel Market. The first activity of UNWTO at this year World Travel Market is the 9th UNWTO/WTM Minister’s Summit to be held on 3rd November. Under the title ‘Destination branding: new challenges in a changing market’, the Summit will focus on the impact of social media and new business models in destination branding.
During the same day, UNWTO will present the first Global Conference on Wine Tourism, in cooperation with the Georgian National Tourism Administration to be held in Georgia in 2016. The activity is part of the UNWTO Gastronomy Network plan of action. The platform was officially presented in September 2015 during the UNWTO General Assembly in Medellin, Colombia and aims to promote information and knowledge to further develop Gastronomic Tourism.
Experiential travel and the booking revolution will also be tackled during the Social Silk Road seminar that will take place on the 4th of November, an activity which will be conducted in partnership with Travel Perspective. The seminar, under the title ‘Is the guidebook dead?' aims at analyzing how new trends are shaping the booking process and how emerging destinations are transitioning into a digital context.
Finally, UNWTO will join PATA at a side event to discuss ‘How do young Asian travelers step out of the crowd’. As the rise in global tourism will be driven by young travelers, particularly from the Asian continent, the session will try to provide strategies to destinations in order to cope with this phenomenon.

Sail, learn and taste mouthwatering meals from Michelin starred chef aboard Crystal’s luxury cruises

Luxury travelers with an appetite for global flavors have two notable “Wine & Food Festival” themed voyages aboard the world’s most awarded luxury cruise line in 2016. Crystal Symphony will sail a 12-day Mediterranean voyage from Istanbul to Rome on May 1, while Crystal Serenity will welcome master chef Nobu Matsuhisa back aboard for a 10-day Alaskan cruise round-trip from Vancouver.
The former offers flavors of the destination at virtually every turn, with a number of opportunities for guests to learn to create some of the mouthwatering specialties from world renowned chefs. The latter features personally hosted dinners and special menus created by Nobu, whose signature cuisine is featured in Crystal’s onboard Silk Road and The Sushi Bar, and cities worldwide.
On Crystal Symphony’s Wine & Food themed Experiences of Discovery cruise, Crystal’s own talented culinary team will be joined by Michelin starred French chef Alexis Gauthier of the Gauthier Soho in Soho, London. The esteemed chef will lead guests through entertaining demos of his most famous dishes, and also offer hands-on instruction to small groups of participants in the ship’s galley. On select evenings, guests will enjoy a specially created menu by Chef Gauthier in the Crystal Dining Room.
Travelers can treat their taste buds ashore, too, whether they seek to dive into fresh pasta dough or to sit back and sip local wines while they take in the local cuisine. Crystal Adventures include a visit to the bustling “Misir Carsisi” spice market and 5 O’clock Tea at Çirağan Palace Hotel (Istanbul), and exclusive cooking lessons with the head chef at Feggera Restaurant (Santorini), at a private villa on the Italian countryside (Sorrento) and at a working farm just outside of Rome. Feasts and accompanying wine tasting top off the experiences.
The voyage, which also offers a veritable smorgasbord of enriching historical, cultural, active and adventurous experiences, begins with an overnight stay in Istanbul, then sails to Kuşadasi, Turkey; Mykonos, Santorini/Thira, Navplion and Kefalonia/Argostolion, Greece; Crotone and Sorrento, Italy; and concludes with an overnight stay in Rome/Civitavecchia.
Aboard Crystal Serenity’s Alaska cruise – one of seven that will explore the spectacular region in summer 2016 – Crystal favorite Nobu Matsuhisa will return to the ship to mingle with guests and host multi-course omakase (or chef’s choice) dinners in Silk Road, as well as other feasts and special menus. Nobu’s Japanese-Peruvian fusion has been served in Silk Road and The Sushi Bar on board every Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity sailing since 2003 and 2008, respectively. Nobu personally trains all chefs, designs all menus, and frequently visits the ships for ongoing refinement.
In addition to the inherent adventure that guests can enjoy in Alaska, there are several opportunities to taste the local fare, including a crab feast in Ketchikan, a salmon bake in Juneau and a traditional English tea in Victoria, British Columbia. From Vancouver, the “Grandeur of Alaska” sailing visits Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Sitka, Alaska, as well as cruising Glacier Bay and the Inside Passage and calls to Victoria and Prince Rupert (maiden visit), British Columbia, Canada. Other “Wine & Food Festival” themed voyages in 2016 include taste exploration of South America and the Panama Canal, Southeast Asia, New England and Canada, the Caribbean and South Pacific.
All-inclusive “Silver Celebration” cruise fares for the Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity voyages start at $3,745 and $4,295, respectively, per guest when booked by December 30.

The Spa at Wynn offering seasonal pumpkin services through the end of November

The lounge area at The Spa at Wynn Las Vegas

With temperatures finally dropping below the triple-digit point, fall has officially arrived in Las Vegas. While there may not be much fall foliage to enjoy in the desert, spa-goers can soak up the invigorating properties of the season’s signature fruit—pumpkin—at the Spa at Wynn Las Vegas.
Now through Nov. 30, the Forbes Travel Guide Five Star spa will be offering two seasonal pumpkin treatments using products from the Éminence Organic Skin Care and Body Bliss lines. The first, the PumpSkin Organic Facial (50 minutes, $180; 80 minutes, $275), features products from Éminence Organic Skin Care and begins with a collagen-boosting Yam and Pumpkin Peel and a hydrating Pumpkin Body Cream application. A Pumpkin Latte Hydration Masque is then applied to enrich dry skin, or guests can opt to reduce the signs of aging with an antioxidant Cranberry Pomegranate Masque. Throughout the service, a Wild Plum Tonique is applied to tone and balance the skin. The treatment concludes with a soothing Artic Berry Peptide Radiance Cream and an application of Cinnamon Kiss Lip Plumper.

Guests can also treat themselves to the PumpSkin Organic Body Renewal (80 minutes, $280; 100 minutes, $375), which uses products by Body Bliss. The treatment starts with a full-body exfoliation using a pumpkin spice sugar scrub followed by a massage using an organic pumpkin spice massage oil. An organic pumpkin spice body butter is then applied to the skin and guests are enveloped in a soft linen wrap, sealing in moisture and leaving skin feeling nourished and refreshed. The service ends with a relaxing coconut oil scalp massage.
Before spa-goers enjoy the sumptuous seasonal services, they are welcome to use the spa’s soothing amenities, which include a sauna, steam room, two plunge pools (one cool and one warm), two deluge showers and a spacious whirlpool underneath a glass dome.
The Spa at Wynn Las Vegas is open daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. with treatments starting at 8 a.m. Appointments for non-resort guests are available Monday through Thursday and same-day only Friday through Sunday based on availability. New Study Says Marriott Has the Most Rewarding Hotel Loyalty Program

Ideaworks, a Wisconsin-based company that regularly issues reports on the travel industry, just released a new study (opens in PDF) looking at the value of a few hotel loyalty programs.
The study concludes that Marriott’s loyalty program, Marriott Rewards, has the best value in terms of its “reward payback,” or the ratio between the cost of a reward night in points (adjusted for point value) and its relative cost in dollars.
To complete the study, Ideaworks evaluated 1,440 reward queries across Marriott, Hilton, IHG, and Starwood properties, looking at each chain’s leading three brands over dates ranging from July of 2015 to February of 2016. Marriott was found to have a reward payback of 9.4% while Hilton, IHG, and Starwood followed with 8.9%, 8.6% and 6.1% respectively. Put another way, Marriott’s reward nights were found to have a higher value per point than the other major hotel chains.

Based on the data, Ideaworks then back-calculated the value of each program’s loyalty points, finding thatStarwood’s — measured at $0.029 per point — were valued at more than three times those of IHG and Marriott.
That valuation is an important component of any traveler’s hotel loyalty consideration, and is directly related to the rate at which travelers accrue points. Ideaworks points out that standard members of the Hilton HHonors program earn 15 points per dollar spent at the hotel while Starwood members only earn two. It thus follows that Starwood points would hold a higher value in terms for paying for each room.
Where the study stops short is in their analysis of how the full spectrum of travelers accrue hotel points. While Ideaworks takes into consideration the direct earning of points through hotel stays, many travelers — particularly those that travel often for business — accrue points through credit card purchases or special promotions. Between ancillary income streams and accelerated earning for elite members, almost every traveler earns thus earns hotel points at a different rate, so their personal points valuations will end up varying slightly from Ideaworks’ calculations.
Ideaworks acknowledges this caveat over the course of its narrative, saying that the study is a basic analysis for general purpose travelers and doesn’t take into account earnings rates, elite bonuses, or any ancillary benefits that a hotel loyalty program could or could not provide. And for the general traveler, the analysis is spot on. For the rest of the community that micromanages its award points, credit card bonuses and elite status though, a more comprehensive analysis factoring in a wider spectrum of factors may be appropriate.
More insight into the study including its full methodology and caveats can be foundover at Ideaworks.

2015 North American Guest Experience Award Winners Announced

In the lofty sunlit halls of the Orange County Convention Center representatives from some of North America’s most noteworthy and remarkable luxury properties like Trump International Hotel, The Four Seasons and The Langham Chicago met to discuss the current state and the future of the industry. All gathered were a little anxious — yet excited — to learn if they would receive the recognition of excelling as the best in their nominated category at the 2015 North American Guest Experience Award Ceremony.
At 5:00 the doors opened and everyone filed into the beautifully lit conference room. Hues of the International Luxury Hotel Association’s (ILHA) signature color, purple, illuminated the stage setting the mood for the Inaugural 2015 Ceremony. The awards were part of ILHA’s Fast Forward 2020 Luxury Hotel Conference and Hospitality Wellness Expo, which took place September 27th – 29th.
This year, ILHA partnered with TrustYou, the leading provider of online reputation management and the inventor of the Meta-ReviewTM.  TrustYou powers Google hotel reviews and aggregates over 100 travel sites. Meta-Reviews allow travelers to make the best possible informed decisions based on a summary of other reviews from across the web. TrustYou, calculated the top five hotels in each category and the winners were presented at the award ceremony on the evening of Monday, September 28th.
Among the greatest challenges currently facing the hospitality industry is the dawn of the user review. In the past, a guest who may have had a notable experience — either positive or negative — may have only shared their story with a handful of friends and family. Today, this same guest can have the same experience and post it across the internet mostly in anonymity. The guest’s voice has become a huge platform that other potential guests will take into account.
“Reviews and guest feedback are increasingly important for travelers as they make their booking decisions. TrustYou is pleased to partner with ILHA to honor hotels that receive constant praise from millions of travelers worldwide, across hundreds of review sites,” said Margaret Ady, Vice President of Marketing.
TrustYou takes thousands of user reviews from all over the internet and collects them into Meta-Reviews. More than 12,000 hotels use TrustYou to analyze benchmarks and respond to reviews, tweets and other user generated content. TrustYou took these reviews and analyzed them to establish the seven most relevant categories for Luxury Properties across all of North America. These include: Best Food and Beverage, Best Grounds, Best Lobby, Best Rooms/Housekeeping, Best Service, Best Spa and Best Overall.
“The awards are based on the only expert opinions that truly matter today, the guests who have actually stayed at the hotel,” said Barak Hirschowitz, President of the International Luxury Hotel Association. “Online transparency has changed the way travelers book rooms and created a seismic shift in consumer buying trends. A hotel’s online reputation has become the single most important factor when making their final purchasing decision between similar hotels in any location.”
The ceremony was kicked-off by Steve Tipton from Simmons Hospitality, who sponsored the event. Tipton then introduced Barak Hirschowitz, a familiar figure who has become synonymous with the luxury hospitality industry, who acted as host and master of ceremonies for the event. Hirschowitz then named the winners for each category individually as they each came to the stage to collect their awards.
In the category of Best Overall, The Langham Chicago (US) and The St. Regis Punta Mita, (MX) tied for first place. A second tie occurred in the category of Best Food and Beverage between the Four Seasons Biltmore (US) and the El Dorado Maroma (MX) while Trump International Hotel Waikiki Beach Walk (US) swept in the two categories of Best Service and for Best Rooms/Housekeeping. Why Delta cancels flights between Atlanta and Dubai?

North America’s Leading Airline; Delta Air Lines is cancelling its flights between Dubai and Atlanta. The cancellation of the service will be effective from February 11, 2016, the airline said. The announcement comes months after Delta said that it is reducing its flights between Atlanta and Dubai from a daily service to a weekly one.
Peter Carter, Delta’s E.V.P. and Chief Legal Officer complains of competing with Gulf airlines because he said they were accepting massive government subsidies that have distorted the competitive landscape.
Alongside other U.S. airlines, Delta has asked the federal government to open consultations with Qatar and United Arab Emirates, which own Emirates, Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways. Carter noted that the Middle East carriers receive about $42 billion in subsidies from their governments.
“Emirates has been flooding the market with capacity,” Carter said. “We know this is not the first route we’ve had to cancel as a result of the subsidized Mideast carriers.”

With today’s announcement, the airline will serve 15 nonstop destinations from Pittsburgh, including Las Vegas, Orlando, and Dallas with nearly 30 flights a day.
The St. Louis flight will depart Pittsburgh daily at 8:25 a.m.
“We were very excited to celebrate Southwest’s 10th anniversary in Pittsburgh earlier this year, and we are delighted that they continue to recognize the need for additional service here at Pittsburgh International Airport,” Allegheny County Airport Authority CEO Christina Cassotis said. “This is emblematic of strong community partnership and support from all of our stakeholders.”
Pittsburgh International Airport currently serves 51 cities nonstop, up from 37 two years ago. Passenger traffic is up about one percent year-to-date.

katadytikostourismos
